The investment is private, but the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia is committed to speeding up licensing, exempting fees and “collaborating on the commercial side, gathering lists of potential buyers” for the homes, specified António Miguel Castro, president of Gaiurb. The cooperation protocol, signed between Gaia City Council, Arrow Global and the Ferreira Group, provides for the demolition of two buildings in Oliveira do Douro to make way for the new constructions. Work is scheduled to begin in the summer, namely in August or September.
Vila Nova de Gaia's Local Housing Strategy aims to meet the housing needs of people who live in poor conditions or who have financial difficulties and to facilitate access to their first home for young people. To this end, the construction of 66 houses in Grijó and Madalena has been launched, under the 1st Right program and with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). The total investment is 15 million euros: nine million invested in Madalena and six million in Grijó.
New housing model in Grijó
Nineteen of the 30 houses under construction in Grijó are ready for delivery. António Miguel Castro wants to use the configuration of this ‘neighborhood’, with the houses facing a pedestrian square, to experiment with a new social dynamic. "We're going to bring together people over 50 and single-parent families with traditional families. The aim is to create communities."
Between June and September, the 36 houses under construction in the streets António Fernando Almeida Pinto Tavares and Benjamim Jorge Moreira, in the parish of Madalena, will be completed.
Modular construction opens up new opportunities
In Grijó, there are another 6,000 square meters with building potential. At the moment, the Municipality of Gaia is studying the construction model, but may go ahead with modular construction.
