The Gaia City Council will proceed with the renovation of eight educational facilities identified as priorities under the municipal education strategy. The investment covers one high school and seven elementary and middle schools and aims to improve teaching and learning conditions, safety, and comfort for the educational community.
The project is part of the 2026–2030 Municipal Strategic Education Plan and addresses the renovation needs identified at various schools throughout the municipality. The municipality intends to modernize buildings, equipment, and outdoor spaces, ensuring that the infrastructure better meets today’s educational requirements.
The plan calls for action at the following establishments:
- Escola Secundária Gaia Nascente, em Oliveira do Douro;
- Escola Básica 2,3 Padre António Luís Moreira, nos Carvalhos, Pedroso;
- Escola Básica 2,3 de Santa Marinha;
- Escola Básica 2,3 Anes de Cernache, em Vilar de Andorinho;
- Escola Básica 2,3 D. Pedro I, em Canidelo;
- Escola Básica 2,3 Júlio Dinis, em Grijó;
- Escola Básica 2,3 de Avintes;
- Escola Básica 2,3 do Olival.
Padre António Luís Moreira Elementary School 2,3 and Gaia Nascente High School have already had their funding approved through the Portugal 2030 program. For the remaining six schools, the Gaia City Council plans to draw on funding made available under the European Investment Bank’s framework loan.
According to Firmino Pereira, vice president of the Gaia City Council and councilor for Education, the existing support mechanisms allow for the financing of a significant portion of the projects, but require a substantial financial effort on the part of the municipality. The projected municipal contribution is around 20 million euros.
Projects Planned for 2027
Bids for the design of the two schools that already have funding in place are expected to be issued shortly. The goal is to begin construction on these projects in early 2027, in accordance with the timelines associated with the approved funding.
The projects include the complete renovation of the school buildings, the refurbishment of sports facilities, and the creation of new spaces for community use, notably auditoriums. The municipality expects the work to proceed without disrupting normal school operations.
The renovation of these eight schools represents another step toward improving the educational network in Vila Nova de Gaia, enhancing the quality of learning spaces and contributing to better conditions for students, teachers, and other professionals in the school community.
