One of Primark's four new stores will open in Gaia

Primark, a clothing and accessories retailer, announced on May 6 an investment of over 45 million euros to expand its store network in the Portuguese market, including Vila Nova de Gaia. This announcement follows the €40 million investment package announced in June 2024, which included the opening of four stores (Montijo, Guimarães, Viseu, and Covilhã), as well as the expansion of the Colombo store.

The Irish brand will open four stores: GaiaShopping (Vila Nova de Gaia), Fórum Castelo Branco (Castelo Branco), Alegro Setúbal (Setúbal), and in downtown Porto, which will host the opening of Primark’s first street-level store in Portugal. According to the company, this investment will create more than 300 jobs in Portugal and increase the number of stores to 18 by the summer of 2027.

Since its first store opened at the UBBO Shopping Center in 2009, Primark has expanded its business, resulting in a total of 13 stores currently operating in Portugal. The new Primark Porto will open in the Palladium building, one of the city’s landmarks, on Rua de Santa Catarina. The new store will have five floors and, according to the company, is being built “with respect for the building’s history and its importance to Porto.” In addition to the new openings, the announced investment includes the expansion of the Primark store at Fórum Coimbra, one of the busiest in the country.

The new investment promises to create more than 300 new jobs, as well as comprehensive internal training programs and learning and development opportunities at all levels. Full-time and part-time positions will be available, both for store associates and management roles.

According to Nelson Ribeiro, Head of Sales for Primark Portugal and Spain, the Portuguese market is important to the company: “Portugal is an important market for Primark, and this investment reflects our confidence in the market. Over the past 17 years, we have built a solid presence and developed a loyal customer base that appreciates our combination of timeless essentials and current fashion. We are very excited to continue growing and to introduce more customers in Portugal to Primark’s incredible value for money.”
